Disclaimer
The limits of what this website and this service do, stated plainly, because electrical work carries real risk.

Safety first
If you smell burning, see smoke, or suspect an electrical fire, leave the building and call emergency services immediately.Do not use this website, and do not wait for a callback. Electrical fires can develop inside wall cavities where they cannot be seen.
Nothing on this site should be relied on in an emergency, and nothing here is a substitute for calling the emergency services when there is a risk to life or property.
We are not an electrical contractor
Hire Local Electrician is a free referral and connection service. We do not hold an electrical contractor license, we do not employ electricians, and we do not perform, supervise, manage, or inspect electrical work of any kind. Full detail is in our service provider disclosure.
General information only
All content on this website, including service pages, location pages, guides, and answers to common questions, is general information about electrical systems and the work involved in maintaining them. It is published to help you understand a situation well enough to make a good decision about it.
It is not:
- advice about your specific installation;
- a diagnosis of a fault you are experiencing;
- instructions for carrying out electrical work yourself;
- a substitute for assessment by a licensed electrician;
- a statement of the code requirements in your jurisdiction.
Electrical systems vary enormously by age, region, construction method, and by whatever previous owners and contractors did to them. No article can account for that. Where we describe what "usually" happens, your installation may differ.
Do not attempt electrical work you are not qualified for
Electrical work carries risk of electrocution, fire, and serious injury. Circuits are not always wired the way they appear, conductors can remain live when a switch is off, and panel service lugs stay energised even with the main breaker off.
Nothing on this site is an instruction or encouragement to carry out electrical work yourself. We accept no responsibility for any loss, damage, or injury arising from anyone acting on general information published here.
Codes, permits, and licensing change
Electrical codes are revised on a cycle, adopted at different times by different jurisdictions, and frequently amended locally. Licensing is regulated at state level and, in some states, at county or municipal level. Permit requirements are local and vary.
Requirements described on this site reflect widely adopted practice at the time of writing and may not match your jurisdiction. Your electrician is responsible for holding the appropriate license and for obtaining any permits the work requires.
Note also that codes apply at the time work is performed. An installation built to the standards of its era is not in violation simply because requirements have since changed.
No warranty on work performed
Electricians reached through this service are independent businesses. They set their own prices, hold their own license and insurance, provide their own warranty, and are solely responsible for the work they perform.
We make no representation or warranty as to the quality, timeliness, pricing, or outcome of any work. Our verification of licensing, insurance, and service area reduces risk but is not a guarantee of any particular result. Any contract for work is between you and the electrician; we are not a party to it.
No cost estimates
We do not publish prices. Electricians in the network set their own rates, and quoting figures on their behalf would be misleading. Where we describe what affects cost, that is context for a conversation with an electrician, not an estimate.
Coverage information
Coverage information on this site reflects the ZIP codes electricians in the network have confirmed they serve across all 50 states. It indicates that coverage exists, not that an electrician will be available at any particular time. Coverage changes as electricians join the network and adjust their service areas.
External links
This site may link to third-party websites, including licensing boards and public data sources. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy, or practices.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Hire Local Electrician accepts no liability for any loss or damage arising from use of this website or reliance on its content, or from work performed by any electrician reached through this service. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited. See ourterms of use for the full position.
