Why switch work is less simple than it looks
The device on the wall is straightforward. What is behind it varies considerably. A switch box might contain a simple switch loop with two conductors, a full circuit passing through, travellers for multi-location switching, or several circuits sharing a box.
That variation is why swapping a switch sometimes takes ten minutes and sometimes turns into running a new conductor. The most frequent example is smart switches: the device needs a neutral, and older switch loops routinely do not have one.
Getting dimming right
Dimming is where most dissatisfaction with switch work originates, and it is nearly always a matching problem. Three things must agree: the lamps must be dimmable, the dimmer must be designed for the load type, and the total load must sit within the dimmer’s range, including its derating when ganged with other dimmers.
Tell your electrician what lamps you actually have, or plan to have. Buying a dimmer first and discovering it is wrong for the lamps is the common sequence.
Multi-location switching
Adding control from a second location means running travellers between switch positions, which is a cable-running job rather than a device-swapping one. In some situations wireless or smart options avoid opening walls, which can make them cheaper overall despite costing more as devices.

Common problems
What actually goes wrong
Dimmer and lamp incompatibility
The most common complaint after a dimmer install. Many LED lamps are not dimmable, and those that are require a dimmer designed for LED loads. The symptom is flicker, buzz, a limited dimming range, or lamps that will not go low without dropping out.
No neutral in the switch box
Most smart switches need a neutral conductor to power their electronics. Older switch loops often carry only the hot conductor. This is the usual reason a smart switch cannot simply be swapped in.
Three-way switching wired incorrectly
Controlling one light from two locations uses travellers between the switches. Mis-wired three-way circuits produce the familiar behaviour where the light only works when the other switch is in a particular position.
Worn switch mechanisms
Switches have a finite number of operations. A switch that buzzes or feels vague internally is wearing out, and a switch generating heat is a fault worth addressing.
Overloaded dimmers
Dimmers have a wattage rating and derate when ganged together in one box. Exceeding it causes overheating.

Why do my LED lights flicker on a dimmer?
Almost always a compatibility issue. Either the lamps are not dimmable, or the dimmer is an older type designed for incandescent loads. LED lamps draw far less current than the incandescent lamps dimmers were originally designed around, and many older dimmers need a minimum load to operate smoothly. The fix is a dimmer specifically rated for LED, matched to the lamps you have.
Can I fit a smart switch anywhere?
Not always. Most smart switches need a neutral conductor to power their radio and electronics, and many older switch boxes contain only the switched hot. Some models work without a neutral, with limitations. There is also box depth to consider. Smart switches are bulkier and older shallow boxes sometimes cannot accommodate one safely.
What is the difference between three-way and four-way switching?
Three-way switches control one light from two locations. Adding a third or further location uses four-way switches wired between the two three-ways. The naming is confusing because a three-way switch has three terminals, not because of the number of locations.
My switch buzzes. Is that dangerous?
Attend to it. Buzzing usually means either a loose connection, a dimmer struggling with an incompatible load, or a worn mechanism. A loose connection under load generates heat, which is the concern. If the switch plate is also warm, stop using that circuit and have it looked at.
