Where outlets are required, not just wanted

Code sets minimum spacing for receptacles so that no point along a wall is an unreasonable distance from one. Kitchen counters have their own tighter rules. These exist specifically to reduce reliance on extension cords, which is the failure mode that adding outlets solves.

If you are running cords across a room or leaving power strips permanently connected, that is the situation the spacing requirements were written to prevent.

Termination is what makes the difference

Most outlets can be connected two ways: by pushing the conductor into a hole at the back of the device, or by securing it under a screw terminal. The push-in method is faster and it is the single most common cause of intermittent outlets appearing years later, because those connections loosen. A properly terminated outlet is not more expensive in materials. It just takes slightly longer.

Dedicated circuits

Certain appliances need their own circuit rather than sharing one. Kitchen counter appliances, microwaves, dishwashers, laundry equipment, and window air conditioners all draw enough that sharing produces repeated tripping at best. If you are adding an outlet for a specific appliance, mention what it is. It changes whether the answer is a new outlet or a new circuit.

What actually goes wrong

Not enough outlets for actual use

Homes wired decades ago were designed around far fewer devices. Permanent extension cord use is the practical symptom, and it is a genuine fire risk rather than merely untidy.

Missing GFCI protection

Code has required GFCI protection in wet and damp locations for many years, expanding over successive cycles. Older homes are not required to retrofit, but kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, and outdoor locations without it lack meaningful shock protection.

Ungrounded three-prong outlets

A common and dangerous shortcut. Fitting a three-prong outlet to a two-wire ungrounded circuit. It appears grounded and is not, so surge protectors do nothing and appliances lose their protective path.

Worn receptacles

The contacts inside an outlet lose tension over time. A plug that falls out is making poor contact, and poor contact under load generates heat.

Shared circuits for high-draw appliances

Microwaves, window air conditioners, and space heaters on general-purpose circuits are a common cause of repeated tripping.

    Never fit a three-prong outlet to an ungrounded two-wire circuit without either running a ground or using a GFCI with the required labelling. It creates the appearance of protection that does not exist.

Can an outlet be added to an existing circuit?

Often yes, provided the circuit has capacity and the addition does not exceed what the conductors and breaker allow. An electrician assesses the existing load first. For high-draw appliances the answer is usually no: those need a dedicated circuit, which is why microwaves and window air conditioners so often trip breakers when added to general-purpose circuits.

What is a GFCI outlet and where do I need one?

A GFCI monitors the current going out against the current coming back. If it detects an imbalance, current leaking somewhere, which is what happens in a shock, it cuts power in a fraction of a second. Code requires it in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, laundry areas, outdoors, and near water. If your home predates those requirements you are not obliged to retrofit, but it is among the most worthwhile safety improvements available.

My house has two-prong outlets. What are my options?

Three approaches. Run a ground to the outlets, which is the most thorough and the most expensive. Replace the first outlet on the circuit with a GFCI and protect those downstream, with the required "no equipment ground" labelling. This provides shock protection but not a true ground. Or rewire the circuit. Which fits depends on your budget and what the circuit feeds. Anything with sensitive electronics or surge protection really needs a genuine ground.

How high should outlets be?

Standard practice puts general outlets around 12 to 18 inches above the floor and kitchen counter outlets around 42 inches, though accessibility requirements and local amendments vary. Kitchen counter spacing is specifically regulated so no point along the counter is far from an outlet. Your electrician will know the local requirement.
