Electrical work in Chicago
Chicago is one of the few American cities that requires wiring to run in conduit instead of cable, and that rule shapes almost every electrical job here. Work that would be a quick cable pull in the suburbs means getting wire through pipe in the city, which changes what's possible in an old building and what it costs. Brick two-flats, bungalows and courtyard buildings add their own limits.
Adding a circuit means pulling new wire through existing pipe if there's room, or running new conduit if there isn't, and neither is quick in a brick building with plaster walls. Old work done in cable without a permit has to be corrected, not extended, and that is how a small job grows.
In two-flats and three-flats, the units usually share one service and a basement meter bank, so an overload upstairs becomes a building problem and the electrician needs the basement opened. Winter brings ice onto overhead drops, and summer cloudbursts back up sewers into basements where the panels sit. Illinois has no statewide electrician license; Chicago licenses electrical contractors through its Department of Buildings.
In a house wired before 1950, the usual jobs are home rewiring, an electrical panel upgrade to retire the fuse box, and grounded outlet installation where two-prong receptacles are still in use. If you've just bought one, start with an electrical inspection.

When to call urgently
- A burning smell near outlets, switches or the panel
- Visible sparking, arcing or scorch marks
- A shock from an appliance, switch, faucet or fixture
- Water reaching outlets, the panel or wiring
- A breaker that will not stay reset, or a panel that is hot to the touch
Local conditions
What do electricians get called for in Chicago?
We cover the Bungalow Belt, Logan Square, Pilsen, Rogers Park, Bridgeport and Hyde Park, along with the rest of the ZIP codes listed below.
Cable where the city requires conduit
Unpermitted work from years back often used cable, and it turns up once a wall is opened. It has to be redone in conduit, which is why a small job in an older building sometimes gets bigger.
One service for a two-flat or three-flat
Many buildings run on one service with the meters in the basement. When the upstairs unit trips the main or overheats a shared panel, the fix involves the whole building.
Fuse boxes in the Bungalow Belt
Bungalows wired between the 1910s and 1930s often still have a fuse box behind a remodeled kitchen. Replacing it usually comes before central air, a new range or a basement buildout.
Sewer backups and the sump pump circuit
Heavy rain backs up sewers across whole blocks and reaches basement panels. A dedicated, protected sump pump circuit is one of the most requested jobs in the city.
Porches, coach houses and garages
Back porches, coach houses and detached garages are usually fed by long runs added later, and that's where outdoor-rated protection and grounding are most often missing.

Available in Chicago
Which electrical service do you need?
Is the old wiring in my Chicago house safe?
It depends on its condition more than its age. A licensed electrician checks the splices, the grounding and the panel, tells you which circuits need replacing and which can stay, and you'll have an estimate first.
What does electrical work cost in Chicago?
It depends on what the house needs. In a pre-1950 home the big jobs are a rewire and a service upgrade, priced on how many circuits there are and how much wall and ceiling has to be opened. A single repair costs far less. You'll know the price first, and you only pay for work you agreed to.
Can I get an electrician in Chicago at night or on a weekend?
Yes, for anything urgent. Our line is answered 24 hours a day. Tell us what's happening and we'll get a licensed electrician out who takes after-hours calls. Nights and weekends usually cost more than a weekday visit.
