Electrical Services for Homes and Businesses

Find your job below, or tell us what the power is doing. We'll get a licensed electrician out for whatever it turns out to be.

Not sure which you need?

Which service
do I need?

You don't have to pick one. Call Hire Local Electrician from anywhere inall 50 states and tell us what you're seeing (a breaker that keeps tripping, a burning smell, lights that flicker). We'll get a licensed electrician out, and the electrician works out what the job is. Starting from the symptom gets the right visit booked the first time.

Order of work

Does one job
depend on another?

Sometimes, and it nearly always comes down to the panel. Most jobs on this page stand on their own, but an EV charger, a generator, a rewire or surge protection can depend on what the panel has left to give.

A house gets a fixed number of amps from the service coming in from the street, and every large addition uses some of them. So the answer to "can you fit a charger?" sometimes starts with a load calculation on the panel.

If something larger is coming in the next year or two, mention it at the first visit, even if it isn't what you're calling about. It often changes what makes sense to do now.

Vehicle charging and standby power

A Level 2 charger draws 40 amps or more continuously, and a standby generator has to carry whatever you ask of it during an outage. Both are sized from what the service can supply, so the load calculation comes before the quote.

Out of breaker spaces, or out of amps?

They are different problems with different answers. A panel with no room left but adequate capacity can often take a subpanel. A service already near its limit needs upgrading however many spare spaces the panel has.

Rewiring changes the panel question

A rewire rarely replaces circuits one for one. Kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms need dedicated circuits that older homes didn't have, so the new wiring needs somewhere to land. The panel is usually part of the same conversation.

Protection depends on the panel you already have

A whole-home surge device mounts at the panel and needs both a space and a sound grounding and bonding arrangement. Arc-fault and ground-fault breakers have to be listed for your panel, and for some older panels none are made. That turns adding protection into a panel decision.

Scoping the visit

What can one
visit cover?

More than you'd think, as long as the jobs are small. Most of the cost of a small electrical job is the visit rather than the work. Getting to you, parking, shutting off the circuit and testing afterwards take the same time whether the list has one item on it or five.

So when you call, mention the other things too, including the ones you stopped noticing months ago: the dead outlet behind the couch, the switch that always needs pressing twice, the light fixture nobody replaced because the ceiling is high.

Two kinds of work don't group well, and it helps to know which before the day.

Group these
Outlets, switches and dimmers, light fixtures, a ceiling fan, a bathroom fan, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Each is short work once the electrician is already there with the ladder out.
Give fault-finding its own visit
An intermittent fault has no predictable duration. An electrician who also has four fixtures to hang that afternoon is working against the clock on the part of the job that most needs patience.
Permitted work runs to its own schedule
Panel work, new circuits and rewiring need a permit and an inspection, and the jurisdiction sets that timetable. It won't fit into an afternoon of small jobs.
