The box is the job
If there is one thing worth knowing about ceiling fan installation, it is that the electrical connection is trivial and the support is not. A ceiling fan is a moving mass suspended overhead. It applies oscillating load continuously for years.
Fan-rated boxes exist for exactly this and are braced directly to structure. Standard fixture boxes are not, and a fan mounted on one is a genuine failure risk. If you are buying a fan to replace a light fixture, budget for the box replacement: it is usually the larger part of the work, especially where the ceiling has to be opened to reach the joists.
Control arrangements
Combined fan-and-light units raise a wiring question: do you want to control them separately? Doing so requires either an additional conductor to the switch, which may mean running cable, or a remote or smart control that separates them electronically. Deciding this before installation avoids doing the work twice.
Sloped and high ceilings
Vaulted, sloped, and high ceilings each need specific hardware. Angled mounts and appropriate downrod lengths. Mention the ceiling type when you call, because it changes both the parts needed and the time involved.

What actually goes wrong
Mounted on a box that is not fan-rated
The most common and most serious fault. A standard fixture box supports a static weight. A fan applies dynamic, oscillating load. Fan-rated boxes are specifically braced to the structure, and fans installed on standard boxes do come down.
Wobble
Usually blade imbalance, a bent blade holder, or loose mounting hardware. Persistent wobble is not just annoying. It accelerates wear on the mount and the box.
No separate control for fan and light
A single switch to a combined fan-light means running both together unless a remote or a second conductor is added.
Wrong fan for the location
Outdoor and covered-porch fans need damp or wet location ratings. Indoor fans deteriorate quickly outdoors.
Insufficient ceiling height
Blades need adequate clearance from the floor, and low ceilings need flush-mount fans rather than downrod-mounted ones.

Ceiling Fan Installation questions
Can a ceiling fan replace an existing light fixture?
Only if the box is replaced with a fan-rated one, which it almost always must be. A standard fixture box is designed for a static load and is not braced for the oscillating forces a fan produces. This is the part of the job that takes the time, particularly where there is no attic access above and the ceiling has to be opened.
Why does my ceiling fan wobble?
Most often blade imbalance. Blades of slightly different weight or a holder that has bent. A balancing kit resolves most cases. If balancing does not fix it, check the mounting hardware and the box itself, because a loose mount produces wobble that will get worse.
Do ceiling fans actually help with cooling costs?
They make a room feel cooler by moving air across skin, which allows a higher thermostat setting for the same comfort. They do not lower the actual air temperature, so running a fan in an empty room saves nothing. Used alongside air conditioning in occupied rooms, they can allow a meaningfully higher set point.
What size fan does my room need?
Blade span is matched roughly to room size: smaller spans for compact rooms, larger for open spaces. Ceiling height matters too, since blades need clearance from the floor, and low ceilings call for flush-mount models. Very large or open-plan rooms are sometimes better served by two fans than one oversized one.
