Electrical work in Vancouver
Most electrical work in Vancouver is about adding load: an EV charger, a heat pump, a hot tub or a finished basement on a panel that's already busy. Call Hire Local Electrician with what you're adding, and we'll get a licensed electrician out to check the panel first.
About 60% of homes here went up after 1980 and mostly need room for new loads. The older 40% is where the bigger jobs are: original panels, smaller services and, in houses wired from about 1965 to 1973, aluminum branch circuits.
November through February is storm season west of the mountains and cold season east of them. July and August heat waves bring a second wave of overloaded circuits. A new circuit for a charger or a heat pump, or a panel upgrade, normally needs a permit and an inspection in Vancouver; replacing a fixture or a switch often does not.
Most work here is about adding load: EV charger installation, an electrical panel upgrade to make room for it, and whole-home surge protection.

When to call urgently
- A burning smell near outlets, switches or the panel
- Visible sparking, arcing or scorch marks
- A shock from an appliance, switch, faucet or fixture
- Water reaching outlets, the panel or wiring
- A breaker that will not stay reset, or a panel that is hot to the touch

What goes wrong with wiring in Vancouver homes?
Which of these applies to your house depends mostly on when it was built and what has been added since. If you know the year, tell us when you call.
Aluminum branch wiring from the 1960s and 1970s
Aluminum branch circuits were common in houses wired from about 1965 to 1973. Aluminum works loose at outlets and switches, so warm cover plates and flickering lights are the warning signs, and the fix is a connector rated for aluminum at every device.
Panels at the end of their working life
Plenty of panels put in during the 1960s and 1970s are still in service, and some brands from that period are known for breakers that fail to trip on a fault. Replacing one is a planned safety job, not an emergency, and it's the most common big upgrade in houses this age.
Room in the panel for new loads
Even a modern service fills up. A Level 2 charger on a 40 or 60 amp circuit, a heat pump and an electric range running together can push the load past what the main breaker allows, and a full panel may have no slots left for the new circuit.
Protection that hasn't kept up
Ground-fault and arc-fault protection rules have tightened several times since many of these homes were built. Kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoor circuits installed to an older standard are the usual candidates when an inspection or an insurer raises a question.

Which electrical service do you need?
Can I add an EV charger to my Vancouver home?
Usually, yes. What decides it is whether the panel has an open slot and the service has room for a dedicated charger circuit. A licensed electrician runs a load calculation and tells you whether the panel needs an upgrade first, or whether a charger turned down or load management will do.
What does electrical work cost in Vancouver?
It depends on the job. In newer homes the bigger costs are a charger circuit or a panel upgrade, priced on the distance from the panel and whether the service has room. A switch, outlet or fixture costs far less. You'll know the price first, and you only pay for work you agreed to.
Can I get an electrician in Vancouver at night or on a weekend?
Yes, for anything urgent. Our line is answered 24 hours a day. Tell us what's happening and we'll get a licensed electrician out who takes after-hours calls. Nights and weekends usually cost more than a weekday visit.
